Just in case anyone's interested, I have installed drivers and gearbox in Windows7 (x64), and used it to record my jazz band using all 8 inputs simultaenously (with no effects at the time of recording) into Reaper x64 @ 48kHz, 32bit. There were no recording issues over the 4 hours that the UX8 was used, quality of recording was fantastic.
There was an issue with using main out 1 (on the back) to send the vocals to a monitor, there was a constant high pitched output the whole time. Not having used this before I don't know if it is a driver issue or a hardware one, fyi the UX8 was positioned over 1m away from the pc used to record.
Post recording, I have been using it as my soundcard while mixing, and have encountered no issues with the hardware or the VST gearbox plugins I'm using in the fx processors in Reaper. (and getting NONE of the hardware dropouts that I had in Vista, requiring a restart).
This was on a clean install of Windows7, on the following hardware:
mainboard: ASUS P5Q-E
Processor: Intel E8400 (overclocked to 3.6GHz, with speedstep enabled)
If you want any more info please ask, the mixes will be done in approx. 2 weeks if you want to hear how it sounds.
Hope this helps somebody!
David
Thanx for the info. I'm using XP MCE and will be lucky to bybass Vista for Win 7 when the time comes.
I experienced the high pitched noise on the UX8 outputs also until I switched to Balanced cables.
Ahhh, balanced cables, that might be it, we only had a spare instrument one
. Guess I shoulda looked a bit harder! I only realised today I actually recorded at 16bit, not 24. Honestly, through a normal set of speakers I cant hear a difference! I'm getting access to a set of behringer truth's on tuesday, I'll find out then for sure.
btw, go for windows 7,a million times better than vista, the 'superbar' (taskbar) alone is worth the jump from XP! I've even stopped using rocketdock, but I'm not sure that'll last ![]()

Definitely post links always nice to "hear" results... Reaper Rocks! and this ux8 seems to be none to shabby an interface to compliment the process...of getting sound down and out
I just purchased the X3Live about a week ago and got a new Laptop with Windows 7 yesterday. I was able to download the newest version of Monkey but cannot find anywhere to download Gearbox or drivers or anything else for Windows 7. Did you just download the ones for xp/vista? Please let me know, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, Josh.
On the software download page, when you go to select your hardware, there should be two boxes: BETA and ARCHIVE. If you check the BETA box, the Windows7 driver should get listed. After downloading and installing the driver, I got the gearbox software from the same page, the (most recent?) version suggested by Line6Miller in another post. Just DON'T allow it to install any drivers, as they're not the Win7 ones! You can't get anything via monkey as the drivers arn't 'released' yet. you can activate your addons though.
Hope this helps!
David
btw on further (extended!) use of the gearbox plugins and ux8 for several hours at a time, I have had not one problem! I may just stick with the beta drivers! I'll be keeping a copy backed up just in case!
HI David,
Real quick
I am currently using Vista but am ready to upgrade to windows 7.
A common problem with UX8 users has been the BSOD if you use the onboard usb 2.0 ports. Most have solved this isuue by using an add-on usb 2.0 card and running the UX8 through that.
Did you pplace an add-on card on your machine or are you going directly into the onboard Asus motherboards usb 2.0 ports with the UX8?
Which version of W7 are you using?
Thanks
Tom
Hi Tom,
Sorry for the delay, I'm mad busy here atm!
I had a lot if trouble on vista with hardware dropouts and driver crashes, but I believe that was attributed to the 64bit reaper and pod farm compatibility. I havn't tried pod farm on Win7, and don't intend to as gearbox works fine.
To answer your question, no I have no add-on card, I'm using the onboard ports which I think are hosted by an intel controller on the P45 chipset. I am using a wireless logitech dongle for my keyboard and an infared optical mouse at the same time, and had no problems whatsoever (although I remembered later I forgot to change the recording bit depth and was recording at 16bit, so was using less than the max bandwitth). This was using all 8 inputs simultaenously.
I'm using home premium edition (my Vista was vista pro - oem edition)
Anything else let me know!
David
Downloaded the latest Beta driver. Using x64 W7. Still getting the bsod. Not compatible with Asio4all.
This has been my experience for now. Any other information needed please let me know.
Thanks
Bilal Zubair.
OK guys, as promised, here's an early master of one of the tracks we recorded!
It is an early master, and it's not the full band, because I'm learning as I go I started with the easy ones!!
Comments, tips and HELPFUL criticism welcome!
David
I am using the following:
HP DV7-3085 Laptop (Intel Core i7 720, 6 GB RAM, 1333 MHZ FSB, 500 GB HD, 17" screen)
UX8 with Beta drivers for Windows 7
Sonar 8.5 Producer (64 Bit)
Windows 7 (64 bit)
I can't believe what this setup can do so far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So far the biggest file I've loaded was 25 audio tracks, 3 soft synths and 40 pluggins and my processor is running at about 31% according to Sonar and 24% according to Task Manager without any glitches whatsoever, while surfing the net with all hardware enabled.
It seems like the Intel Core i7, Windows 7 and Sonar 8.5 are a match made in Heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait for line 6 to formally put out Windows 7 drivers and Sonar releases 8.5.2
I know what you mean, the UX8 works really well in Windows7, it seems most of the problems are with the other L6 units. I hope fixing them dosn't break the UX8!
I'm putting the finishing touches on the CD right now, working with the UX8 over the course of a month, not a single problem!
I'll post up Myspace/Reverb Nation/Facebook links later when the tracks are up!
David
